“Donald Trump and the Return of Seditious Libel”

A must read, and read it now: Richard Tofel, in ProPublica, gives a powerful and limpid history of the unconstitutional concept of “seditious libel”–remember the trial of daring publisher Peter Zenger, whom we all should have learned about in school?–the First Amendment, and Donald Trump’s vow, backed up by many of his lawsuits, to demolish the media’s freedom to criticize public figures.

This year, for the first time since at least Richard Nixon, the leader of one of our major political parties has pledged to limit press freedom by restricting criticism of his prospective rule.
