Is everybody nuts today? A laugh from the NYT and the DOJ

Source: Trump Acknowledges He Is Under Investigation in Russia Inquiry – The New York Times

OK, so if you were watching Lawrence O’Donnell last night, you would have had the Rod Rosenstein statement warning about anonymous “officials” read out loud to you, and you’d know that everybody who knows anything about Washington and politics and the investigations analyzed it as “…huh?”

In describing the statement as “oddly worded,” the Times says,

In the statement, Mr. Rosenstein wrote that “Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous ‘officials,’ particularly when they do not identify the country — let alone the branch or agency of government — with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated.”

Right. So what did the Times do? Precisely what an outstanding newspaper should do: check for confirmation with the source.

And here’s what it came up with:

A Justice Department official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, said that no one had asked Mr. Rosenstein to make the statement and that he acted on his own.

Too funny.
