Depositions: what happens when defendants stall?

I’ve had numbers of search strings asking about depositions. Several wonder what happens if defendants are not deposed.

I’m thinking that last point has something to do with stalling, i.e., defendants keep putting off being deposed. So could there be consequences?

New York City’s answer to a lawsuit filed by a man who claims police officers unlawfully entered his home during a gay pride party and beat him will be struck unless the officers are produced for depositions within 45 days, a Brooklyn judge has ordered.

Note that depositions are part of the discovery process.
