Not sure if the New York Times designed one page yesterday to thrust at us readers two different stories that seem to be Siamese twins.
First, on the left side of the page: Peace Effort With Taliban Is Excluding Women, Report Says – NYTimes.com.
Then, on the right side of the page, nestled ever so cozily up to the one above: Turkish President Says Women Shouldn’t Be Considered Equals – NYTimes.com.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish president, has just elevated himself into the pantheon of disgraceful powerful men. He’s dragging what was recently considered a fairly progressive Muslim country back into the primeval muck, just like most of the other Muslim countries. Maybe he’s being neighborly. But he certainly isn’t to me.
I want to hear Turkish women speaking up loudly, right now, when they still can.
And this, just before Turkey Day.
