{"id":12860,"date":"2013-03-06T16:19:35","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T21:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/?p=12860"},"modified":"2013-03-06T16:19:35","modified_gmt":"2013-03-06T21:19:35","slug":"victim-of-illegal-stop-and-frisk-gets-14g-settlement-from-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/?p=12860","title":{"rendered":"Victim of illegal stop-and-frisk gets $14G settlement from city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hard on the heels of the New York Times <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p13yRc-3kg\">article about how the City is fighting lawsuits against the New York Police Department<\/a>, comes this, from the Daily News: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/victm-illegal-stop-and-frisk-15g-settlement-city-article-1.1279570\">Victim of illegal stop-and-frisk gets $14G settlement from city after his NYPD manhandling is caught on tape &#8211; NY Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not as hypocritical or contradictory as it sounds. The City&#8217;s Law Department is apparently carefully evaluating each case on its merits. In this matter, there was a surveillance tape of the stop-and-frisk that supported (to a degree) the victim&#8217;s story and contradicted the police story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The video, which showed the cop pushing St. Hillaire [the victim] against a building, even prompted a city lawyer to conceded in January that there appeared to be no legal basis for the stop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The cop who did the stop-and-frisk has been sued several times previously\u2014and the City has had to settle five of those cases since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>As the Daily News piece (by John Marzulli) says: &#8220;Clarke [the cop] might need a tutorial on constitutional law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hard on the heels of the New York
