{"id":15103,"date":"2013-07-05T17:04:13","date_gmt":"2013-07-05T21:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/?p=15103"},"modified":"2017-08-23T08:31:10","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T12:31:10","slug":"the-nypl-is-sued-hurrah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/?p=15103","title":{"rendered":"The NYPL is sued: Hurrah!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"entry-title\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Opponents Sue to Block New York Public Library Renovation Plan<\/em><\/h1>\n<address class=\"byline author vcard\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>By <a class=\"url fn\" title=\"See all posts by PATRICIA COHEN\" href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/author\/patricia-cohen\/\">PATRICIA COHEN<\/a><\/em><\/address>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Some opponents of the New York Public Library\u2019s plan to renovate its Fifth Avenue headquarters, which will involve removing its research stacks, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court to stop the project.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The suit, filed by the nonprofit group <a title=\"Organization Website.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.advocatesforjustice.net\/\">Advocates for Justice<\/a> on behalf of five preservationists and scholars who include the historian David Levering Lewis, accuses the library of violating its charter and the state\u2019s Constitution by dismantling seven floors of stacks and removing books from the site. It also says the library failed to conduct an environmental impact review. &#8212;<\/em> The New York Times, July 4, 2013<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My comment: YES!!!<\/p>\n<p>I guess it&#8217;s up to me to point out that ever since that rotter Stephen Schwartzman gave the NYPL a fortune, i.e., he bought the naming rights to the great library over which this lawsuit has been filed, the library has been:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making all kinds of destructive plans to eliminate a lot of branch libraries;<\/li>\n<li>Announcing plans to spend heaps of money in destroying parts of the library system;<\/li>\n<li>And very very aggressively demanding that I donate money to &#8220;save the library!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My response is: why are you coming to me when your fund-raising has reached high into the glittery towers of NYC&#8217;s amoral financial business world?<\/p>\n<p>And do not, I repeat <em>NOT<\/em> ask me for money to support the Stephen Schwartzman Library, oops, I mean the New York Public Library, don&#8217;t I? \u2014 when this is the same Stephen Schwartzman about whom DealBook in the New York Times wrote this in August 2010, during the last presidential campaign:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Stephen A. Schwarzman is well-known for being an outspoken \u00e9minence grise on Wall Street. But the <strong><a class=\"tickerized\" title=\"More information about The Blackstone Group\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/blackstone_group\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Blackstone Group<\/a><\/strong> chairman and chief executive has an unfortunate history of sometimes using inapt analogies. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In speaking recently about the Obama administration\u2019s crackdown on finance, Mr. Schwarzman appears to have done it again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>At a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2010\/08\/15\/schwarzman-it-s-a-war-between-obama-wall-st.html\">meeting of a nonprofit\u2019s board<\/a> last month, according to <a class=\"tickerized\" title=\"More articles about Newsweek.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/n\/newsweek_inc\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Newsweek<\/a>, Mr. Schwarzman compared the administration\u2019s plans to raise the carried interest tax rate to war. Then he elaborated: \u201cIt\u2019s like when <a class=\"tickerized\" title=\"More articles about Adolf Hitler.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/h\/adolf_hitler\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Hitler<\/a> invaded Poland in 1939.\u201d<\/strong><span id=\"more-272839\"><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Newsweek\u2019s Jonathan Alter reported the reaction among some attendees was not quite simpatico. \u201cA little over the top for a proposal to make hedge-fund managers pay their fair share in taxes,\u201d one is quoted one as saying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Mr. Alter didn\u2019t identify the nonprofit in question, and while DealBook has confirmed that Mr. Schwarzman made the comments in question, we haven\u2019t yet learned the name of the organization.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Mr. Schwarzman is a member of a number of nonprofit organizations, so the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackstone.com\/cps\/rde\/xchg\/bxcom\/hs\/firm_ourpeople_4800.htm\">list of possibilities<\/a> includes:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The <a class=\"tickerized\" title=\"More articles about Council on Foreign Relations\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/c\/council_on_foreign_relations\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Council on Foreign Relations<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Business Council<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The New York Public Library &#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yeah, so.
