I subscribe (and donate) to the Brennan Center for Justice. Today’s email from them reported on and linked to what sounds like an invaluable resource, which should eventually seed legislation for an even more invaluable resource: pro bono legal work for people who can’t afford lawyers but who need them.<\/p>\n
The Cardozo School of Law’s National Center for Access to Justice, in alliance with one huge law firm and other major professional organizations, has published an intensive state-by-state study they’ve been compiling of access to lawyers.<\/p>\n
They call it The Justice Index<\/a> and say it’s not yet comprehensive. But it looks very good to me.<\/p>\n For one thing, it’s clearly written, i.e., easy to read and understand, bless them.<\/p>\n For another, if you wander your cursor over the top strip and hover on “Findings,” you’ll see a sub-category called “Attorney Access.” If you click this, the index will provide you with a state-by-state listing (they say it’s not finished yet but what they provide is really helpful) of pro bono lawyers’ organizations, like Legal Aid. I’d like it if they’d also include a link to the sites, and phone numbers and addresses, but what they’ve done here is really excellent. I bow to them.
