An amendment sponsored by Wyoming Republican Rep. Cynthia Lummis would suspend a law that dates back to the Reagan administration and allows parties who prevail in lawsuits against the government to have their legal fees paid with public funds. Lummis is targeting environmental groups that she claims use fees from lawsuits to fund their operations. If signed into law, the amendment would eliminate most civil-rights and human-rights lawsuits filed against the government, because the small monetary damages and high costs would discourage private attorneys from undertaking such suits unless they can recover fees and expenses from the government when they prevail.<\/em><\/p>\n I think<\/em> this Orwellian nonsense is labeled “tort reform.” The Washington Spectator <\/em>is a invaluable newsletter published by the Public Concern Foundation Inc.
