\u00a0PUL-I-KUMRI, Afghanistan \u2014 Zahra said a neighbor raped her in her home on Friday. It was the most humiliating event in her unremittingly painful life, and the next day she begged her husband, Najibullah, to move their family so the man could not attack her again. He refused.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Sunday afternoon, she poured kerosene over Najibullah and lit him on fire.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI stepped back and watched him burn,\u201d Zahra said. \u201cI thought, \u2018Someone is going to die, and it is going to be him or it is going to be me.\u2019 \u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

What a remarkable thing to do and to say. “Someone is going to die, and it is going to be him or it is going to be me.”<\/p>\n

Yet it’s nothing to applaud. Yet it’s something to applaud.<\/p>\n
