For everyone who thinks that the American tabloid press is bad … you haven’t read or seen a British tabloid. They all seem to function on a lower level than the National Enquirer<\/a>. Or the New York Post. If that’s possible.<\/p>\n

Anyway, George Clooney is furious at the British Daily Mail rag and it’s the New York Times (!?) where I picked up this story:<\/p>\n

The tabloid headline might read something like this: Sexiest Man Alive Becomes Angriest Man Alive.<\/em><\/p>\n

This week, George Clooney<\/a> condemned The Daily Mail, the British newspaper, after it reported that the Lebanese mother of his fianc\u00e9e objected to their wedding on religious grounds. Relatives had joked about the death of the bride if she defied her mother\u2019s wishes, the article said.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have family members all over the world, and the idea that someone would inflame any part of that world for the sole reason of selling papers should be criminal,\u201d Mr. Clooney wrote in a response<\/a> published in USA Today, adding, \u201cWhen they put my family and my friends in harm\u2019s way, they cross far beyond just a laughable tabloid and into the arena of inciting violence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s a terrific point Clooney is making. He’s not just personally furious; he’s politically offended.<\/p>\n

I’m wondering whether this can be a defamation case. England’s libel laws<\/a> are not like ours.<\/p>\n
