And a lot of cases popped up, especially one against Fox Searchlight Pictures, a Rupert Murdoch subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p>I am not pleased with New York&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p13yRc-68Q\">federal appellate court, known as the Second Circuit. <\/a>Which has leaned heavily toward employers and away from these poor kids who take this jobs out of desperation.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the items:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A ruling by federal appeals judges involving the studio Fox Searchlight Pictures could have broad ramifications for the way employers rely on unpaid work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/03\/business\/unpaid-internships-allowed-if-they-serve-educational-purpose-court-rules.html\">Employers Have Greater Leeway on Unpaid Internships, Court Rules &#8211; The New York Times<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u00a0A federal court ruling makes it harder for students to challenge exploitative work programs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Source, Ross Perlin, The New York Times: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/03\/opinion\/interns-victimized-yet-again.html\">Interns, Victimized Yet Again<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of key paragraphs in the Times&#8217; opinion piece:<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-6\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"369\" data-total-count=\"3752\"><em>At oral arguments in January \u2014 I had filed an amicus brief on behalf of the plaintiffs \u2014<strong> it was evident that the three judges had no firsthand experience of what they call \u201cthe modern internship.\u201d<\/strong> Focusing on \u201cwhat the intern receives in exchange for his work,\u201d the judges completely ignore the significant benefits that employers derive from their interns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"197\" data-total-count=\"3949\"><em>Yes, the best internships pay a living wage, teach real skills and can lead to permanent jobs, but the majority do none of the above. Without pay, interns lack the most basic workplace protections.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"197\" data-total-count=\"3949\">And then there&#8217;s the New York Law Journal:<\/p>\n<div class=\"title-div\">\n<div>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Circuit Adopts Employer-Backed Intern Pay Standard<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><small class=\"authors\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorklawjournal.com\/id=1202629286986\/Ben-Bedell\">Ben Bedell<\/a>, New York Law Journal<\/small><time> July 6, 2015<\/time> \u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row main-page-div\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<div class=\"span7 stalkerOffset \" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p class=\"article-text basic-article-text\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Second Circuit unanimously rejected the Department of Labor&#8217;s six-factor test championed by the plaintiffs, three aspiring filmmakers who worked at Fox Searchlight Pictures, saying &#8220;the proper question is whether the intern or the employer is the primary beneficiary of the relationship.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"article-text basic-article-text\">I am really bugged. And there&#8217;s no point in appealing this to a higher court, since the &#8220;higher court&#8221; is the Highest Court, i.e., the Supremes, and they have been handing everything to businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-text basic-article-text\">Although the interns could appeal, I think, to the full Second Circuit. I once saw the full Second Circuit courtroom. It was empty at the time, but that long bench high in front of me, with I don&#8217;t remember how many judges&#8217; seats, was so impressive. Took my breath away. And the Second Circuit is historically more humanely considerate in its decisions than this particular decision would suggest. So maybe they will appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-text basic-article-text\">The Times&#8217; opinion piece by Ross Perlin got it right, when he used the word &#8220;exploitative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-text basic-article-text\">Why don&#8217;t we just discard all labor laws and go back to child labor?
