BISMARCK, N.D. \u2014 About an hour after some 200 police officers cleared the last demonstrators against the Dakota Access Pipeline from their sprawling encampment on the North Dakota prairie<\/a> last week, Gov. Doug Burgum signed into law four bills aimed at making it easier to control such protests.<\/em><\/p>\n

With a few strokes of a pen, he placed the state in the vanguard of an emerging backlash by conservative forces against political and social advocates who see demonstrations \u2014 however unruly \u2014 as free speech protected by the Constitution.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a season rife with demonstrations over immigration, pipelines, abortion, women\u2019s rights and more, Republican legislators in at least 16 states have filed bills intended to make protests more orderly or to toughen penalties against ones that go awry. Republicans in two other states, Massachusetts and North Carolina, have said they will file protest-related bills.<\/em><\/p>\n

So not only is Trump deploying a neo-Gestapo force in ICE <\/a>and border patrol thugs to round up and make disappear undocumented people, the GOP is legislating crazily to suppress our protests…against the neo-Gestapo force and everything else.<\/p>\n

Disgusting people, the GOP. They are desperate.<\/p>\n

Once again, here is the First Amendment. Bolded.<\/p>\n

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t see anything in there saying, “right of the people peaceably to assemble in a manner that only we state legislators can determine is orderly and if they’re not our-definition orderly we’ll penalize ’em!”<\/em><\/p>\n
