{"id":32949,"date":"2017-05-06T12:57:48","date_gmt":"2017-05-06T16:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/?p=32949"},"modified":"2017-05-06T12:57:48","modified_gmt":"2017-05-06T16:57:48","slug":"how-many-more-rotten-decisions-will-scotus-produce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/?p=32949","title":{"rendered":"How many more rotten decisions will SCOTUS produce?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In light of the continuing series I&#8217;ve borrowed from<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p13yRc-8rG\"> Casey Sullivan and FindLaw.com (and added to and commented upon) &#8212; the 13 worst Supreme Court decisions<\/a> &#8212; I saw these two items in SCOTUSblog.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll give you an idea about what sort of hope we should hold out for just decisions from this Supreme Court, now that Gorsuch is on it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<em>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/united-states\/21721658-could-he-emerge-courts-new-swing-vote-chief-justice-roberts-leans-left\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Economist<\/a>, Steven Mazie asks whether, with \u201cNeil Gorsuch now in Antonin Scalia\u2019s old chair and retirement rumours flying about Anthony Kennedy, the 80-year-old perennial swing justice,\u201d \u201cChief Justice Roberts [could] be emerging as the court\u2019s new median vote,\u201d noting that although a \u201cwider look at \u2026 Roberts\u2019s record does not suggest even-handedness,\u201d \u201cin one of the most politicised eras of the Supreme Court\u2019s history, the chief seems keen to tamp down public perceptions that the court, too, is bitterly partisan.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefacultylounge.org\/2017\/05\/is-justice-alito-a-crit.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Faculty Lounge<\/a>, Calvin TerBeek unpacks \u201ca\u00a0rather remarkable speech Justice Alito gave at the Claremont Institute in early February,\u201d in which, \u201c[i]n addition to setting forth a robust constitutional conservatism\u2014not, notably, couched in the narrative of originalism\u2013Alito also explicitly advocated for the larger conservative political agenda, in the process invoking decades-old resentments and through lines in postwar conservatism.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To give you an idea of my own range of hope, I&#8217;m categorizing this post as &#8220;the god problem,&#8221; &#8220;the American war on women,&#8221; and &#8220;the war on workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yeah, and &#8220;voting rights.&#8221; And maybe &#8220;the filthy rich,&#8221; and of course &#8220;The Koch Bros Final Solution to Democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Certainly &#8220;strictly for bitter laughter.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In light of the continuing series I&#8217;ve borrowed from Casey Sullivan and FindLaw.com (and added to and commented upon) &#8212; the 13 worst Supreme Court decisions &#8212; I saw these two items in SCOTUSblog.
