\u201cThe top editor had persuaded the publisher, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, that the usage was a passing fad,\u201d a groundbreaking Times editor, Betsy Wade<\/a>, wrote recently.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nThe New York Times announced on June 20, 1986, that it would embrace the use of \u201cMs.\u201d as an honorific.

So reporters had to pry when interviewing women: Are you Miss or Mrs.?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s none of your damned business!\u201d reporters were sometimes told.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
In 1972, \u201cMs.\u201d was accepted by the American Heritage School Dictionary<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
But it took protests, internal pressure, time and a smart strategy to persuade The Times to follow suit.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Paula Kassell<\/strong><\/a>, a feminist writer and publisher, bought Times stock so that she could raise questions about the policy at shareholders\u2019 meetings.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
In April 1986, she persuaded Mr. Sulzberger to convene language experts \u2014 but then received word that the paper would allow \u201cMs.\u201d without further discussion.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
As The Times prepared its first edition using \u201cMs.,\u201d Ms. Wade wrote, \u201cGloria Steinem, Mary Thom and other editors of Ms. magazine walked into the city room with a basket of flowers for the editor\u201d \u2014 A. M. Rosenthal \u2014 \u201cand the copy editors and reporters applauded.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
