And I&#8217;ve spent four years trying to find answers to the question. <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p13yRc-9KB\">I found a number of answers which, when compiled, satisfied me fairly well.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s New York Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/05\/opinion\/trump-automation-artificial-intelligence.html\">Thomas Edsall does a thorough compilation of his own in, <\/a>&#8220;Why Trump Still Has Millions of Americans in His Grip.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the best I&#8217;ve seen. (The only item not cited is my favorite amygdala study but I&#8217;ll give him a pass on that one. At least until the end of this post.)<\/p>\n<p>He summarized his points in the first three paragraphs:<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Beginning in the mid-1960s, the priorities of the Democratic Party began to shift away from white working- and middle-class voters \u2014 many of them socially conservative, Christian and religiously observant \u2014 to a set of emerging constituencies seeking rights and privileges previously reserved for white men: African-Americans; women\u2019s rights activists; proponents of ethnic diversity, sexual freedom and self-expressive individualism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>By the 1970s, many white Americans \u2014 who had taken their own centrality for granted \u2014 felt that they were being shouldered aside, left to face alone the brunt of the long process of deindustrialization: a cluster of adverse economic trends including the decline in manufacturing employment, the erosion of wages by foreign competition and the implosion of trade unionism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>These voters became the shock troops of the Reagan Revolution; they now dominate Trump\u2019s Republican Party.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I want to emphasize one line in his first paragraph. The &#8220;[e]merging constituencies&#8221; Edsall cites, you&#8217;ll notice, are groups which historically had not <em>had<\/em> the &#8220;rights and privileges&#8221; of the dominant, white, conservative, Christian male class. Nobody was handing these groups &#8212; several of which I belong to &#8212; those &#8220;rights and privileges;&#8221; groups that had been suppressed sort of forever had to <em>demand<\/em> equal rights. They still must because they don&#8217;t have them yet.<\/p>\n<p>Edsall continues, quoting some erudite researchers:<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpurpose.com\/articles\/the-bitter-heartland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Bitter Heartland<\/a>,\u201d an essay in <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpurpose.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Purpose<\/a>, <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/experts\/william-a-galston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Galston<\/a>, a veteran of the Clinton White House and a senior fellow at Brookings, captures the forces at work in the lives of many of Trump\u2019s most loyal backers:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"css-q0oznx etf134l0\">\n<p class=\"css-g6680g evys1bk0\">Resentment is one of the most powerful forces in human life&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Edsall continues, referring to Galston:<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>They \u2014 \u201csocial conservatives and white Christians\u201d \u2014 have what Galston calls a \u201cbill of particulars\u201d against political and cultural liberalism. I am going to quote from it at length because Galston\u2019s rendering of this bill of particulars is on target.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"css-1le37cb ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\"><em>\u201cThey have a sense of displacement in a country they once dominated. Immigrants, minorities, non-Christians, even atheists have taken center stage, forcing them to the margins of American life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\"><em>\u201cThey believe we have a powerful desire for moral coercion. We tell them how to behave \u2014 and, worse, how to think. When they complain, we accuse them of racism and xenophobia. How, they ask, did standing up for the traditional family become racism? When did transgender bathrooms become a civil right?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\"><em>\u201cThey believe we hold them in contempt.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\"><em>\u201cFinally, they think we are hypocrites. We claim to support free speech \u2014 until someone says something we don\u2019t like. We claim to oppose violence \u2014 unless it serves a cause we approve of. We claim to defend the Constitution \u2014 except for the Second Amendment. We support tolerance, inclusion, and social justice \u2014 except for people like them.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Edsall goes on to discuss automation and A.I., which is when I started skimming, until this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>More specifically, [<\/em><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/experts\/mark-muro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark<\/a><em><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/experts\/mark-muro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">] Muro<\/a>, [<\/em>a senior fellow at Brookings]<em> and his colleagues found:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"css-q0oznx etf134l0\">\n<p class=\"css-g6680g evys1bk0\">Heartland states like Indiana and Kentucky, with heavy manufacturing histories and low educational attainment, contain not only the nation\u2019s highest employment-weighted automation risks, but also registered some of the widest Trump victory margins. By contrast, all but one of the states with the least exposure to automation, and possessing the highest levels of educational attainment, voted for Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>OK, that&#8217;s interesting; it names regions particularly infected with the politics of resentment.<\/p>\n<p>It strikes me that Galston&#8217;s resentment &#8220;bill of particulars,&#8221; an interpretation of what the resentment class perceives, is pretty warped. That is not Galston&#8217;s fault; its the resentful perception of this class. Their accusations can each be read as projections of their own moral wrongs and failings on us. Except that &#8220;They believe we hold them in contempt.\u201d They&#8217;re right about that.<\/p>\n<p>( If they want to feel better, <a href=\"https:\/\/sidebarforplaintiffs.naomifein.net\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=37427&amp;action=edit\">they can brag that their amygdalas are bigger than our amygdalas.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This question has been plaguing a lot of us for more than four years.
