Oh, no Canada! Really

From Harper’s Weekly Review:

The province of Ontario argued that it does not owe billions of dollars to First Nations people for breaking its treaty obligations due to the historical expenses of colonization and resource extraction.

I read this several times and the only interpretation I can come up with is that Ontario is forcing First Nations, in effect, to pay reparations for Canadian expenses in the First Nations’ territory Canada seized and colonized.

If my reading is anywhere near accurate, this is so ugly. And although not entirely analogous, it reminds me of France’s behavior to Haiti after Haiti won its freedom from France in a revolution.
