The global GDP loss due to childhood verbal abuse was estimated to be $300 billion, and the damage to global GDP caused by climate change was estimated to be six times the cost of the investment needed for mitigation.
This, from Harper’s July Findings, is so awful it requires further emphasis:
The global GDP loss due to childhood verbal abuse was estimated to be $300 billion, and the damage to global GDP caused by climate change was estimated to be six times the cost of the investment needed for mitigation.
I’m sitting here almost frozen about the global cost of verbally abusing children, less about the cost but how the amount of monetary loss gives such emphasis to the damage done if you abuse your children. Not even physically but verbally. Derogatory name calling. Crushing criticism. Disparagement of a child’s intelligence, competence, abilities, appearance.
I once worked on a study of child abuse and neglect. One particular fact that emerged from that study is that people who abuse or neglect their children were themselves abused or neglected as children.
I’m finding this upsetting so I’m going to stop here.
