The global war against girls in Afghanistan

I read Rod Nordland’s entire piece, “Bartered away at age 5, now trying to escape to a life she chooses,” in the New York Times. It is a predictably awful story about how Islam permits females — in this case, a very young girl — to be treated.

This kind of detailed history may be predictable but it never loses its power to swat you in the solar plexus. It will make you women eternally grateful for living in the U.S.A., despite the creeping forces of misogyny. Although I’ll bet there are areas of this country where families do sell their daughters.
