My invaluable friend, Jerry Coyne, just published this news on Why Evolution Is True: the British version of the Girl Scouts, called Girl Guides, just dropped the reference to god in their pledge of allegiance.
They are keeping, however, their vow of allegiance to the Queen, but hey, this is a big deal. After all, the Queen does not, unlike male gods, require second class status for women. Or girls. I see the Girl Guides decision to drop god as a symbol of solidarity and support for girls in fundamentalist dominated countries who may be shot or burned by acid for going to school.
Who knows what fundamentlist punishment is enacted for girls who join a subversive, radical, god-less organization like the Girl Guides?
