Pakistan: Officer Kills Suspect Accused of Blasphemy, Police Say

A police officer in Punjab Province hacked a man to death apparently over remarks considered to be blasphemous, the police said Thursday, just two days after a Christian couple were killed over accusations of blasphemy in the same province. The man, Tufail Haider, 55, was taken into custody late on Wednesday in Gujrat after a group of people said they had overheard him making the remarks, beat him and handed him over to the police. The officer, Faraz Naveed, attacked Mr. Haider with an ax in his cell after he continued to make remarks related to the companions or disciples of the Prophet Muhammad, the police said.
