The NFL settles lawsuit: “relief, but disappointment”

A painful subject to me because I love football and feel deeply for the men who play it and are damaged by it.

Amid all the articles about the lawsuit, this one is perhaps most instructive for Sidebar, because the Times covers how the plaintiffs feel about the settlement, and thus illustrates one of my Stages of a Lawsuit category: living through and after your lawsuit.

The players’ reaction is “relief but disappointment.”

Which is most likely the usual reaction to settlements: plaintiff and defendant sign off on it, but the only people unequivocally satisfied are the lawyers. They’ve done their job: negotiating a settlement, explaining the deal to their clients and (presumably with compassion) illustrating why it’s a better deal than any of the alternatives.
