The warning sign at the Guggenheim

Yesterday I visited the Guggenheim Museum to see the Kandinsky exhibit.

As I entered, I saw a simple sign, one I’d never seen before in New York City. It was not large, maybe two feet square. It had only writing, no graphics, in black letters on a white background.

It read, “No weapons permitted.” It continued, warning anyone carrying a weapon to go immediately to the security staff.

Never in my life in New York have I seen such a thing.

It took me until last night to feel the full effects. Which are that the mentality of fucking Texas and the fucking Supreme Court has conspired to invade my city, to invade my immediate, intimate life, with the insane, apocalyptic, violent obscenity of guns.

Pushed into my face, from a museum sign.
