Who owns right to say THANKYOU to customers?

Yet another zinger from Harper’s Weekly Review:

Citigroup and AT&T agreed to end a legal dispute about who had the right to use the phrase “THANKYOU” when corresponding with customers.

Should I say anything here? Nah. (I bet you’re THANKINGME for that.)
