Do you recall a couple of the other naming contests I wrote about? I do.
First there was that floating bridge on the Isle of Wight. Name of Floaty McFloatface.
Then there was a contest to name a new dwarf planet. Which isn’t exactly a municipal gizmo, at least not to us on earth but maybe when those alien files are released, we’ll find out about what municipality has the deed to the little gal. (What were the results of that contest? I’ll have to look it up.**)
In 2021, a state now in the news every day — Minnesota — had a contest to name a new snowplow. There were a number of excellent names, but the final vote went to…well, click on this link.
Today, I spotted a new naming contest for another new snowplow, this one in Chicago. I guess times have gotten more activist and political in the naming contest world, because the vote went to…Abolish ICE.
A good name. But, unlike Floaty McFloatface, murmuring it out loud won’t put me happily to sleep at night.
**I just tried to look it up but Perplexity, for the first time, has insisted I use Google and sign up for accounts and fuck all. I am furious. Perplexity has now put up barricades. If I had a shred of paranoia in me, I’d think it was conspiring with Facebook.
