My my! What do we have here? A GOP-er with abortion “issues”

Dear Voters in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District,

I’ve been reading about this advanced course in hypocrisy, a/k/a the American war on women, on my daily variety of opinionated media. But now that even the Times finds reason to publish it, how can I avoid being all schadenfreudish?

(I do wish WordPress would catch up to my own glossary, instead of red-underlining words I’ve made up. Don’t they get me? After all these years? I’m feeling under-appreciated.)

Never mind the above. Well, no, mind it, but do go on to the meat of this business:

Source: Anti-Abortion Congressman Asked Woman to Have One, Report Says – The New York Times

Representative Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania, a strong and frequent critic of abortion, asked a woman with whom he was having an affair to undergo an abortion, according to a report published on Tuesday by The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Mr. Murphy, 65, who is married with an adult daughter, confirmed last month that he “became involved in an affair with a personal friend,” according to a statement previously provided to The Post-Gazette.

The woman involved in the extramarital affair, Shannon Edwards, told the newspaper last month that her relationship with Mr. Murphy had ended.

And a bit more:

In a text message sent to Mr. Murphy on Jan. 25, Ms. Edwards assailed the congressman for hypocrisy. The exchange was included among several documents obtained by The Post-Gazette.

“And you have zero issue posting your anti-abortion stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options,” Ms. Edwards wrote, according to The Post-Gazette. The newspaper said that the text was sent amid what proved to be an “unfounded pregnancy scare.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Murphy voted for legislation that would make it a crime to perform an abortion after 20 weeks of fetal development, according to The Associated Press. The House of Representatives approved the Republican legislation, according to The A.P.; Mr. Murphy is among its co-sponsors. News roundups on his website also list Mr. Murphy as “a member of the Congressional Pro Life Caucus.”

P.S. UPDATE 7:46 pm. Just read on numerous Twitter accounts that Murphy has decided to depart from Congress.
