Some animal news for the New Year

I had to blink a couple of times when I saw this.

Uh. A walrus attacked and sunk a Russian Navy landing craft. In the Arctic.

I read on. This wasn’t just some ordinary run-of-the-mill walrus; it was a lady walrus, with calves or pups or whatever babies are called in walrus. Still, take a look at the boat. It is big, bigger than a breadbox, bigger than a walrus.

You’re all begging for my favorite line from this piece, right?

The [Russian Ministry of Defense] said: “Serious troubles were avoided thanks to the clear and well-coordinated actions of the Northern Fleet servicemen, who were able to take the boat away from the animals without harming them.”

They took the boat away from the animals.

The short article from CNN doesn’t quite explain how she, a/k/a the animals, did it. Maybe because they were getting the news from a Russian medium and maybe Russia does not want everyone on the planet to know how a walrus can sink one of their boats.

Meanwhile, I think we should all drink a New Year’s Eve toast to the walrus. She did good.

Have you adjusted to a world run by robots? Maybe not

Yesterday, I was hearing from my brother-in-law about the TV series “Mr. Robot.”

I knew about it but had never watched it. I told Rob I was getting really tired of re-watchingshows on BritBox or Acorn because they were so much better, even the 20th time, than newer stuff so I was ready for a recommendation.

He convinced me that “Mr. Robot” was worth a look. And I will take that look.

But at this moment I’ll tell you about another story, a true story, reported by AP. It’s about a couple who called the police in the middle of the night because they had been awakened by noises from an intruder.

P.S. It’s worth noting this couple did not yank out guns to defend themselves. And they’re from North Carolina. I give them a standing O.

A monopoly on intergalactic foreign trade?

I picked up what follows from John Ross’s summary of federal court cases on the Volokh Report. I have nothing to say about this, except…

“The plaintiff, a lawyer who styles himself both a monarch and a deity, brought claims on behalf of an Indian tribe alleging that [the state of Louisiana and the United States of America] have, among other misdeeds, monopolized ‘intergalactic foreign trade.'” And his claims cannot proceed, says the Fifth Circuit.
