Confused about SNAP? Here’s why

From Harper’s Weekly Review:

The Trump Administration said it was sending states money to fully fund SNAP benefits for nearly 42 million Americans on the same day that the Supreme Court temporarily upheld the administration’s prior request to block said benefits. Following the decision, a memo from the United States Department of Agriculture ordered any states that had distributed full benefits to “immediately undo” the payment. “There is a chaos,” the governor of Maryland said of the situation, “and it is an intentional chaos.”

After 175 years, Hammacher Schlemmer is closing

I am upset and sad.

Hammacher Schlemmer is/was the best store in the world.

Moreover, it was a unique store, uniquely of New York, the unique City.

No discussion is possible on those points. You could try to inform me of a better store but I’ll come back at you and say, “Oh, does your ‘better’ store sell a heavy glass cheese preserver that genuinely preserves cheese? And inspires you to write a funny little essay about it?”

The joys of Hammacher Schlemmer were many. One of which was its catalogue which entered my mailbox on a regular basis, giving me many minutes of pure pleasure in perusing it, whether or not I saw something I wanted to buy.

For me, Hammacher Schlemmer was connected more to my needs than my wants and my home is replete with things I bought from them and still use, still find necessary.

For a long time, I was afflicted with headaches. HS provided me with a headache band which I kept in my freezer and would wrap around my headache when needed. And the headache would fade away.

I didn’t buy the adorable personal submarine but I bet whoever had the money for it is still submerging herself in any available body of water. Because anything you bought from HS lasted, like, forever. So somewhere the full-size fire-breathing dragon is menacing the neighborhood …

…while some rich kid is still driving around in his child-sized luxury car…

A few years ago I developed a chronic lung ailment and, per my pulmonologist, acquired a breathing device that loosened things up. I bought the one she recommended but found it plastic and not so easy to use or clean. But Hammacher Schlemmer’s Air Physio works perfectly. Indeed, my last purchase from HS was my second Air Physio, bought a couple of weeks ago, after my first one cracked when I dropped it. (My fault; not HS’s.)

There’s a password protection vault in a drawer, and a rug cleaning spray and brush in a closet and in the next week or so I’ll run into other HS devices I am grateful for. Ah, such as my slippers, tucked under my desk.

HS closed, I read, because no one was buying from catalogues nowadays, and that HS had been slow in developing its website so people could use the “online model” for shopping. That is bullshit. See above, re the purchase of my Air Physio.

Amazon was mentioned, of course, as partially responsible for driving HS out of business. I’ve never bought anything on Amazon and never will. And I curse all of you who buy Amazon crap or Home Depot junk. Unwittingly, you have been an army which overran the best store in the world.

Meanwhile, I’m in a type of furious mourning for the loss of the greatest store in the world, where I could find fully tested items that I could not find anywhere else in the universe, items that lasted forever or, if broken, were replaced by the store for free.

Leave me alone for a while.

What’s REALLY doing at the Kennedy Center? Rik and the Icks

Not what I posted twice, once as a disclaimer.

But just when I thought I could forget about my gaffe (if you insist on perusing me gaffing, see above link), what did the New York Times do today? It published Shawn McCreesh’s, “The Kennedy Center Crackup: A Trumpian drama has been playing out inside the performing arts center all year. It has been damaging for business.”

The first paragraph:

This year’s fall season at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts officially kicked off one Friday night in September with “The Sound of Music,” the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein crowd-pleaser about nuns and Nazis.

Furthermore…

The government officials and the right-wing press and hundreds of families settled into their seats. But before the towheaded Von Trapp children got the chance to dance, a voice came over the speakers: All actors needed to immediately clear the stage. There were “technical difficulties,” the voice explained. The crowd whispered as the curtain fell. It stayed down for the next 33 minutes.

And it goes on from there.

  • I, for one, did not know Trump has had his name etched into a marble wall in the Center. That started me wondering how exactly you get etchings erased from marble.
  • Ric Grenell, the new president of the Center, “wanted to be addressed as ‘the ambassador.’…hung huge pictures of himself with Mr. Trump in his theater box. He ordered the National Symphony Orchestra to perform the national anthem before every show it played.”
  • Grenell apparently rarely shows up at his job. So he put in charge of daily management “a cast of small-time Republican operatives,” including “Rick Loughery and Nick Meade. They worked for political groups run by Mr. Grenell and function as his enforcers while he’s away. Because all three have similar names, many in the building refer to this troika as ‘Ric and the Icks.'”
  • Mary Ellen Bowers, a new board member, “said that when she thinks about programming, she asks herself: ‘Are we welcoming families? Are we welcoming Christians? Are we welcoming believers?’”
  • Another new apparatchik with no experience whatsover in arts management expressed wonder when he saw a Cuban ballet company dance. “‘Wow, they’re so talented they could be on a cruise ship.’” (The experienced woman, a dancer, to whom he said this, doesn’t know if he was serious or putting her on. I’d say serious.)
  • Was he the one who keeps saying he wants Paula Abdul sort of entertainment at the Center?

And it goes on.

Maybe all of this doesn’t have the éclat of, say, Kanye rapping Wagner,* but let’s give these guys time. After all, they don’t know what they’re doing right now. With some experience, who knows what will happen? I’d look forward to some sort of performance from…

Ric and the Icks! Live! Tonight! (Maybe.)

*Totally irrelevant, but when, in the ’80s, I went to a privately owned Fiji island, the name of the pilot who flew us in a small prop plane from the Big Island to the Little One was Richard Wagner.
