Here’s an email notice I got from my favorite furniture store, Room & Board. They told me they had become a B Corporation.
What is a B Corporation?, I asked the email. (I talk to anything, mostly food and appliances, but emails are not outside my realm of direct communications.)
Room & Board answered, below. The short answer: “B stands for benefit for all.” This sounds as beautifully conceived as is their artisan-made furniture. (Wander through one of their stores for sheer pleasure, or wander through their catalogue.)
Maybe we can organize a consumer boycott against every corporation that isn’t a B Corporation.
PS. I apologize to Room & Board. In copying their announcement, I got the formatting screwed up.

| B stands for benefit for all. As a B Corp™, we’re joining a global network of companies using their business as a force for good. What does that really mean? We’ve updated our governing documents to show our commitment to operating in a way that positively impacts people and planet, today and into the future. |
|
| While this certification is new for Room & Board, we aren’t new to this way of thinking. We’ve always known there is room to do well and do good. Since our founding in 1980, we’ve cared deeply about our impact—on our customers, staff members, the environment and our local communities. |
|
| Becoming a B Corp gives us a way to quantify that impact. It also keeps us humble about where we can do better. That’s the point. Being a B Corp isn’t just about getting certified. It’s about pushing ourselves to do better, and in the process, making things better for others, too. |
|
| We’re excited for our future as a B Corp, but I want you to know the things you love about Room & Board aren’t changing. We are more committed than ever to timeless modern design, U.S. craftsmanship, sustainability, outstanding service and value. We hope our B Corp certification simply gives you one more reason to feel good about shopping with us. |
|
I’m grateful to the dedicated Room & Board team who ushered us through our certification. I’m grateful to our manufacturing partners who are willing to meet new standards with us. And I’m grateful to all of you who have
| placed your trust in us with your purchases. Helping you create a space you love remains at the heart of what we do. |
