Thoughts on the Deep State

From 538 Significant Digits:

71 percent of Russians

According to a new Pew Research Center survey, 71 percent of Russians say the Russian government did not try to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Whelp, I guess that settles it. Everybody can go home now. [Pew Research Center]

I’ve been pondering the essence of the Deep State. I’d say “penetrating” except there’s nothing to penetrate. Because we do not have a Deep State in this country.

Why? Because, unlike Russia (see above), we have muscular gladiators in our free press. Nothing stays secret, i.e., deep, in our state, not for long. Lies have a shelf life of less than a day. Look how much has been revealed in the past eighteen months! What Deep State are you talking about?

What we’re witnessing, day after day, over the past several years is like being forced to observe a colony of aged nudists who are writhing orgiastically right out in the open. Ugh.

Should I list them? Nah. You know who I’m talking about.

I can sort of grasp why the nudists are flopping around, flesh heaving, yelling “Deep State!” Because their followers need desperately to believe there’s some explanation underneath more gnarly and satisfyingly conspiratorial than watching the nudists cavort.
