“Anonymous” and his opinion piece in the New York Times

In case you haven’t read it, here it is.

I find it to be a stomach-churning and frightening announcement of a White House coup d’état by an unelected cabal of people who call themselves “conservatives” but are not. Their values, as Anonymous proudly proclaims in his repulsively arrogant piece, are (my bolding):

We want the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous…

Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people. At best, he has invoked these ideals in scripted settings. At worst, he has attacked them outright.

In addition to his mass-marketing of the notion that the press is the “enemy of the people,” President Trump’s impulses are generally anti-trade and anti-democratic.

Notice his first criticism of Trump’s “impulses” is anti-trade. Anti-democratic comes second.

Don’t get me wrong. There are bright spots that the near-ceaseless negative coverage of the administration fails to capture: effective deregulation, historic tax reform, a more robust military and more.

I don’t have to comment on this, do I? Well, except to say these so-called policies are “libertarian” — a wholly invented phony movement created by very, very rich men, oligarchs — the focus of which is suppressing our vote so that a true majority does not have a political voice. They must do this because we majority voters do not support these goals.

Anonymous reassures us he is one of the “adults in the room,” a barely tacit and, for me, a repulsive admission that he and his like see themselves as superior in wisdom to the rest of us. He is simultaneously patting himself and us on the head with his Anonymous hand and saying we don’t have to worry about anything because They, not Trump, are in charge.

Terrifying.

But I’m seeing something else here. While Anonymous is openly proclaiming the greatness of conservative goals, he is inadvertently making a defense-of-the-Alamo confession: this  declaration of anti-Constitutional, undemocratic values and power is so open, it serves as a climactic challenge to this country’s real general values and ideals.

It is a deathbed scream from the minority-rule GOP, clearly overwhelmed and used by the mini-minority that is the oligarchs who have bought them, thanks to Citizens United.

I’d very much like the Democrats at the Kavanaugh Judiciary Committee hearings to read this opinion piece to the nominee. What does he think of this character who nominated him? Because if he does not withdraw from the nomination, he will be tainted for life by his link to this Trump.
