When does a stick of dynamite feel like a candle?

Also from Harper’s Weekly Review — and I have a couple of questions about this:

…a Connecticut woman sustained serious injuries after mistaking a stick of dynamite for a candle during a power outage…

Do you have the same questions? Like, why did she have a stick of dynamite in the house? Why would she think a stick of dynamite which, I believe, is covered in paper, felt like wax? When she lit the fuse on the dynamite and it sputtered for a while and did not in general act like a candle wick, did she sort of run?
